The Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA) recently presented Senator James Brewster (D-Allegheny) with a Champion of Public Education award.
The PSBA Champion of Public Education award recognizes lawmakers for their outstanding support of traditional public schools during a two-year legislative session. This support is measured by the legislator’s voting record, bills introduced, attendance and involvement at their local districts, and efforts to work with PSBA to support public schools.
Sen. Brewster, who will be retiring at the end of his current term in 2024, has been a strong advocate for public education. Over the course of his 14 years in the Senate, Sen. Brewster has worked to secure significant funding increases for school districts and for programs that assist schools and advance opportunities for students.
Sen. Brewster has also been an influential champion for school safety issues. Since its 2018 creation, he has been a member of the School Safety and Security Committee, recommending the initial and continuing need for flexible grants for schools to improve school security and employee safety training. He has also supported the need for funding for schools to address student mental health needs.
PSBA congratulates Sen. Brewster on his retirement and thanks him for his years of support for public schools and students in communities across Pennsylvania.
