Board members often complain that they are too busy dealing with the issues surrounding the operations of the school district (budgets, books, buses, balls and bricks) to have time to learn and talk about educational issues affecting students and student achievement.

The second annual PSBA Symposium on Educational Issues for School Board Members is designed to overcome this problem and help boards become better informed about educational issues and will be held at the Wyndham Hotel in Gettysburg, July 13-14.

The opening session/lunch begins at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, July 13, and the conference concludes on Monday with a closing session/lunch. The PA Principal of the Year, James Donnelly, will speak during Monday’s breakfast/general session.

Program highlights at this year’s symposium will include:

  • School climate
  • Service learning
  • Accountability
  • How boards ensure quality education
  • Training and preparing teachers
  • Community engagement
  • How to select quality staff
  • Technology in the classroom
  • Educating the “whole child”
  • High school coaching
  • Reading
  • Creating a collaborative culture for continuous learning for all
  • Staff development for administrators

The symposium’s location in Gettysburg is a great opportunity to bring family along. Access to history, recreation and shopping makes this destination ideal.

There are as many ways to explore the Gettysburg area as there are interests of the visitors who come here. There are numerous ways to enjoy the 40 miles of battlefield roads, including car, bus, walking, bicycling or galloping across the 5,700 acres of field by horseback.

Learn more about the courage and hardships of the soldiers by visiting the 10 Civil War-related museums, or take an authentic Civil War house tour by day and a haunted ghost tour by night. Live theater includes a personal visit with “President Lincoln,” Civil War plays and ghost stories. Throughout the year, visitors can talk to the soldiers in encampments and re-enactments.

And there is more history here than the three days in 1863. View artifacts of the 200-plus years of Gettysburg and the area at the Adams County Historical Society. Enjoy a country drive through the largest fruit belt in Pennsylvania or explore the 18th century with a county driving tour.

When you’ve had enough of history, enjoy fun things like a cool train ride through the beautiful countryside, ride on miniature horses, view a magic town, and quench your thirst at a local brewery or winery. Play a game of golf at one of the area’s 12 professional and miniature golf courses. Check the events calendar at www.gettysburg.com for more information.
